Abstract Formal control systems are a common instrument to align employees’ interests with those of managers and companies. However, research shows that employees perceive formal controls as sign distrust restraint, which can lead costs in the form lower employee cooperation effort (e.g., Falk Kosfeld 2006; Christ 2013). We propose charitable giving reduces these control. draw on halo effect corporate alters perception reaction controls. In laboratory experiment, we find by company creates higher level trust manager who decides implement more positive assessment These effects compared absence giving. thereby provide an example how social responsibility (CSR) activity yields benefits altering behavior internal stakeholders.
